Nanum Broadcasting Station’, which means the broadcasting station to be shared by everyone regardless of their nationality, race and cultural background as reached its second year as the broadcasting station since its opening.
Nanum Braodcasting station is located at Gwangju Gwangsangu inside of the cultural center for foreign workers. Its size is relatively small, but it is doing more meaningful jobs than any other broadcasting station can do.
Today, we are speaking with Lee, Cheon-young, the representative of Nanum broadcasting station, who is also a principal of Saenal school. The saenal school is a school for children from a multicultural family as well as children from overseas and foreign worker family.
국적과 인종, 문화적 배경에 상관없이 모두가 함께 듣고 보고 나눌 수 있는 나눔방송국이 개국 1년째를 맞았습니다.나눔 방송국은 광주 광산구에 있는 외국인근로자문화센터에 위치 해 있는데요. 방송국의 크기는 상대적으로 작지만 나눔방송은 그 여느 방송국에서도 하지 못하는 의미 있는 일을 하고 있습니다. 다문화 가정의 아이들과 해외 유학생, 그리고 외국인 근로자의 자녀들을 위한 새날 학교의 교장 선생님이자 나눔 방송국의 대표자이신 이천영씨와 인터뷰를 진행합니다.

1. First of all, would you mind explaining us about what Nanum Broadcasting station is and what it does especially for foreign workers in Korea?
첫 번째로, 나눔 방송국이 어떤 곳인지, 그리고 한국의 외국인 근로자들을 위해 나눔 방송국이 하는 일이 어떤 것인지 설명 해 주시겠어요?
Nanum broadcasting station was created to help foreign worker family and a multicultural family. So then through Nanum Broadcasting station, we can share various stories about some of the foreign worker families experience while living in Korea as foreigners.
2. So, what is your job as the representative of Nanum broadcasting station?
그렇다면 나눔 방송국의 대표자로서 하시는 일은 무엇인가요?
I am responsible for Desk as copywriter, reporter, or cameraman, and what not. Anyways, I do all kinds of works to run Nanum Broadcasting station.
3. I heard the reporters from Nanum broadcasting station are consist of foreign workers from different countries. How does this work?
나눔 방송국의 기자들이 서로 다른 나라에 어떤 기자들이 있나요?
Right now, Nanum Broadcasting station is made up of news reporters from 20 different countries like Japan, Thailand, vietnam, philippine, Cambodia, Uzbekistan, Russia, Srilanka, etc. Most of them are foreign workers and International marriage migrant women
4. How does Nanum broadcasting station report the stories and articles? How do they get aired?
나눔 방송국은 어떻게 기사를 작성하고 보도합니까?
Mainly, foreign workers and International marriage migrant women are reporters and when they send me the news, I rewrite the news so that they are simple and clear, and then I publish the news to many people through Facebook, Twitter, E-mail, and Smart phone, other broadcasting networks. News source is very important. So the role of multicultural family is becoming more and more important. Usually more than 200,000 people read or watch the news of Nanum Broadcasting station, I think.
5. What kind of stories do the reporters cover? Is there any specific topic you prefer to focus on when reporting?
나눔 방송국의 기자들은 어떤 종류의 사건이나 이야기를 보도하나요? 특별히 주의를 기울이는 이야기나 뉴스가 있나요?
그렇습니다. 주위에 어려움을 겪고있는 동료들을 도와달라는 내용이나, 임금체불, 긴급의료지원등 다양한 현장이야기를 보도하는데요. 특히 긴급의료지원이나 나눔이야기에 관심을 기울이는 편입니다.
Yes, indeed. The reporters cover stories that are on spot such as foreign workers’ asking for help with their coworkers who are struggling, overdue payments, and emergent medical support. Especially they try to focus on medical support and sharing useful resources.
6. I remember reading about the foreign worker from Nepal who has been recently diagnosed with brain cancer but in a desperate need of financial help. Then Nanum broadcasting station covered a story about his situation and people who had heard about him donated money for the surgery. When is the most rewarding moment for you while working for the Nanum Broadcasting station?
네팔 출신 근로자 중 한 분이 뇌암 판정을 받았지만 경제적인 여건이 되지 않아 수술을 받지 못하고 있을 때 나눔 방송국에서 이 이야기를 방송한 덕에 수술비를 위한 모금이 많이 이루어졌었다고 들었습니다. 나눔 방송국에서 근무하며 가장 보람이 있을 때는 언제인가요?
I think the most important thing is that we try to help and support them when they are in a desperate need. And it was such a rewarding moment when we got financial help from warmhearted sponsors who had heard about our news we covered for one of the foreign workers from Nepal with brain cancer. He is now in a recovery room thanks to all of the sponsors and donations that they made.
정말 필요할 때 지원하는 것이 가장 중요한데요. 돈이 없어 죽어가는 이주민들에 대한 이야기를 작성 보도했는데 마음이 따뜻한 후원자들이 나서 도움을 줘 해결될 때 정말 보람을 느낍니다.
7. It is amazing what the Nanum broadcasting station is doing and what it is capable of. How did you come with the idea of starting a broadcasting station for foreign workers?
나눔 방송국이 하는 일, 그리고 무엇을 할 수 있는지 정말 대단합니다. 어떻게 외국인 근로자들을 위한 방송국을 시작할 생각을 하셨나요?
I initially started broadcasting for foreign workers who needed an emergent medical care when I was incapable of helping them. I basically just wanted to give them a hand and I found broadcasting their stories to many others would be the best way to be a help. I had no idea how much this would help, but we receive more and more help and support. I’m really happy that I could start reporting their stories.
제가 방송을 시작하게 된 것은 긴급의료지원이 필요하다 제가 도움을 줄 만한 여유가 없어 이 사실을 많은 사람에게 알려 도움을 받기 위해 방송을 시작하게 되었습니다. 처음에는 얼마나 도움이 올 것인지 알 수 없었는데 시간이 지남에 따라 소외된 이웃에 대해 관심을 기울이는 많은 분들을 볼 수 있었습니다. 그래서 지금은 정말 잘했다 생각합니다.
8. If you don’t mind sharing Nanum Broadcasting station’s final goals and plans, what would that be? Do you plan on helping Koreans from Yeonjaeju and Russia?
러시아 연해주 지역에서 온 고려인을 돕는 계획 등 나눔 방송국의 최종 목표와 앞으로의 계획을 말씀 해 주실 수 있나요?
Nanum broadcasting station will do its best to reduce the number of foreign workers who are dying of poverty and in the long term, we are planning on broadcasting system that will be aired in many different languages and we are also trying to expand our sharing activity to an international level and hoping that what we do can be a global relief aid.
나눔방송은 돈이 없어 죽어가는 이주민이 없도록 도울것이고요. 장기적으로는 각국언어로 직접송출될 수 있는 방송시스템을 구축 국내뿐만 아니라 국제적으로 나눔운동을 확산시켜 세계적인 구호활동을 하는 것을 목표로 삼고 준비하고 있습니다.
9. What does the Nanum Broadcasting Station do to attract more readers and listeners and make them to pay attention to what is being aired?
나눔 방송국은 더 많은 시청자나 청취자의 관심을 모으기 위해 어떤 노력을 하고 있습니까?
As of right now, we are trying to introduce the Nanum broadcasting station to as many foreign workers as possible and we plan on becoming one of the places that come to foreign workers’ mind when they need help through allowing them to participate in various events and activities.
현재 이주민을 상대로 나눔방송을 소개할 것이고요/ 다양한 이벤트와 활동을 통해 이주민에게 다가갈 예정입니다.
10. Any other comments for our listeners regarding the Nanum broadcasting station?

I just want all of the foreign workers who are working really hard in Korea to know that I love them and appreciate their hard work. I would also like the listeners of GFN and many others who are out there to participate in what Nanum Broadcasting station does. No matter how big or little the stories are, Nanum broadcasting station will support them so then the stories can be shared by as many people as possible. Thank you.
